Text: Hebrews 6:4-8

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance;  seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.   7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:  8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing;  whose end is to be burned.

THE HOLY SPIRIT GRANTS US EVERLASTING LIFE

Text: Hebrews 6:4-8

Memory verse: Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Holy Spirit delivers us from death and leads us to the gift of eternal life. We inherit mortal life through Adam, but God gives His Spirit to endow eternal life on His faithful and obedient children. Since the Spirit is God's gift, neither are we born with it, nor can we earn it. He makes Christ real to you and helps you accept Him as your Savior. The Holy Spirit breaks the power that sin has over you, gives you a new nature, and makes you a child of God. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit, which brings us life in union with Christ Jesus, has set me free from the law of sin and death.

The Holy Spirit gets you ready for conversion by letting you see that you are a sinner, condemned to eternal separation from God. He lets you know that you cannot save yourself. He helps you understand that Jesus died in your place. He makes you want to leave your sins and accept the forgiveness Jesus offered you. You need more than just life for your body. You need the everlasting life that God has provided for your spirit. Jesus died in your place to give you that life. And the Holy Spirit brings that life to you. The change He works in you is so great that Jesus called it a new birth. We also call it conversion, indicating change. No one can be God’s child or go to heaven without this miracle of the spiritual birth. Jesus said in John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 

Those who live their lives in union with God in this age will take part in the resurrection to eternal life. However, those who have tasted what God offers and rejected it, "those who have done evil" will be resurrected to face their Judge, and then they will be cast into the Lake of Fire and die the second death John 5:29. Christ's sacrifice is one such payment. However, if an individual will not allow Christ's blood to pay that debt, the only recourse is for his life to be taken in payment for his sin. If he is determined to live in opposition to God, unconcerned about obeying God's commands, that person would live a miserable life forever. He will not be given the gift of eternal life that is available by Christ and through the Holy Spirit.

1. Come, Holy Spirit, come;

Dispel the darkness from our minds,

And open all our eyes.

3. Convince us of our sin,

Then lead to Jesus' blood,

1.  Holy Spirit flow like a living water from the inside of me in Jesus’ name.

2.  LORD God Almighty, break the power of sin in my life by Your Spirit in Jesus’ name. Amen.
