    THE WISDOM AND POWER OF GOD

    Text: I Corinthians 1:30-31

    Memory verse: John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

    Apostle Paul described the emptiness of the wisdom and power relied upon by unbelievers as well as the misuse of the wisdom and power given to the Christians at Corinth. Now, in one brief verse, he summarizes the visible expression of this wisdom and power in Christ and how it ultimately affects those who believe.

    But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, that, as it is written, "He who glories, let him glory in the Lord." Apostle Paul describes God's wisdom and power in terms of what it accomplishes rather than what it is made of or what motivates it. For example:

    We can describe the power of a storm my measuring its wind velocity and direction using various scientific instruments. Or we can show you a picture of a house completely levelled by this storm to the point where even the foundation is completely sucked out of the ground. That one photograph gives you the understanding of how powerful the storm was. This is Apostle Paul's approach to describing God's power and wisdom, a quick picture of what these accomplish in a foolish and weak person considered by worldly standards. Apostle Paul says that through God's wisdom and power, this same person receives: A Relationship with God in Christ. Worldly wisdom could not even produce a clear image of God, nor could it perceive His will or His mind. God's wisdom and power devised a way for an ordinary person to not only know the true God as well as His will and purpose, but also have an intimate relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

    In Romans 8:15-16 Apostle Paul further explains that this relationship is nothing less than actual sonship. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  • TODAY'S HYMNAL

    CGDS HYMN 49: SS & S 306:

    FAITH IS A LIVING POWER FROM HEAVEN

    1. Faith is a living power from heaven

    Which grasps the promise God has given ;

    Securely fixed on Christ alone,

    A trust that cannot be o'erthrown.

    2. Faith finds in Christ whate'er we need

    To save and strengthen, guide and feed;

    Strong in His grace, it joys to share

    His cross, in hope His crown to wear.

    3. Faith to the conscience whispers peace,

    And bids the mourner's sighing cease ;

    By faith the children's right we claim,

    And call upon our Father's name.

    4. Such faith in us, O God, implant,

    And to our prayers Thy favour grant,

    In Jesus Christ, Thy saving Son,

    Who is our fount of health alone.
