Text: 1 John 5:10-11

10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself:  he that believeth not God hath made him a liar;  because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.   11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

THE HOLY SPIRIT COMFORTS US THROUGH HIS ASSURANCE

Text: 1 John 5:10-11

Memory verse: Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” There are times when we might feel distant from God. In our own insecurities, we might be tempted to wonder if the Lord treasures us like His Word assures us is true.  We might even begin to question whether we’re really part of His family.

It’s God’s desire that all believers in Jesus Christ experience the assurance of their salvation.  He wants us to walk with confidence in the knowledge that we’ve been welcomed into His eternal family through Jesus whom we have been united to through faith.  A major facet of the Holy Spirit’s ministry from generations to generation is to speak to our hearts and help us to understand with certainty that we are children of God.  He reminds us of this truth and convinces us it’s possible to have a deep and abiding relationship with Him.  These reminders bring great comfort to our hearts when we start feeling distant or unwanted.

As the window is the proper medium to let the light of the sun into our apartments, so the understanding is the proper medium of conveying the Spirit's influence on the soul.  We, therefore, have the utmost evidence of the fact of our adoption which we can possibly have; we have the word and the Spirit of God; and the word sealed on our spirit by the Spirit of God.  And this is not a temporary invasion: if we take care to walk with God, and not grieve the Holy Spirit, we shall have an abiding testimony; and while we continue faithful to our adopting Father, the Spirit that witnesses that adoption will continue to witness it; and we shall know that we are of God by the Spirit He gave to us.

1.  Lord Jesus, put Your assurance in me by Your Spirit.

2.  LORD God Almighty, give me the substance, evidence, and assurance about my future through the Holy Spiri in Jesus’ name. Amen.
