THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS THINGS TO OUR REMEMBRANCE

  • TODAY'S BIBLE TEXT

    Text: 1 John 2:20-27

     20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.   21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.   22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?  He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.   23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father:  (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.   24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning.   If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.   25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.   26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.   27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you:  but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

    THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS THINGS TO OUR REMEMBRANCE

    Text: 1 John 2:20-27

    Memory verse: John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

    Jesus was not going to abandon us, he promises to send the Advocate, other translations say the Helper, or the Comforter. The Greek word means someone who is called to one’s aid and so we can see that all of those words fit the meaning. Jesus is sending someone who will help us along the path, who will aid us in whatever we are facing, who will be there for us no matter the circumstances. And he tells us exactly who this is, the Holy Spirit. Just think about that for a moment. God himself will come and live inside of us, he will never leave us or abandon us, he will always be there in anything we face in life.

    If in the things which I have already spoken to you, there appear to you any obscurity, the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, Counsellor, and Instructor, will take away all your doubts, free you from all embarrassment, and give you a perfect understanding in all things: and this Spirit you shall receive. He shall bring all things to your remembrance by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit which enabled them not only to give a true history of his life and death, but also gave them the most perfect recollection of all the words which he had spoken to them, so that they can transmit to future generations.

    The Holy Spirit would seasonably remind them of the sayings of Jesus, which they might otherwise have forgotten. In the organization of the church, and in composing the sacred history, he would preside over their memories, and recall such truths and doctrines as were necessary either for their comfort or the edification of His people. Amid the multitude of things which Jesus said during a ministry of more than three years, it was to be expected that many things which he had uttered, that would be important for the edification of the church, would be forgotten. The Holy Spirit made use of their memories, and doubtless of all their natural abilities.  He so presided over their memories as to recall what they had forgotten, and then it was recorded as a thing which they distinctly remembered, in the same way as we remember a thing which would have been forgotten. The Holy Spirit would teach them the meaning of those things which the Saviour had spoken. Thus, they did not understand that he ought to be put to death till after his resurrection, though he had repeatedly told them that. So, they did not till then understand that the gospel was to be preached to the Gentiles, though this was also declared to them before.

  • TODAY'S HYMNAL

    CGDS HYMN 21: SS&S 873:

    BLESSED ASSURANCE, JESUS IS MINE

    1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;

    Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!

    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

    Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

    Refrain

    This is my story, this is my song,

    Praising my Savior all the day long.

    This is my story, this is my song,

    Praising my Saviour all the day long.

    2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,

    Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;

    Angels descending, bring from above

    Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

    3. Perfect submission, all is at rest,

    I in my Savior am happy and blest;

    Watching and waiting, looking above,

    Filled with His goodness, lost in His love
